When he published his Essais (“Attempts” or “Experiments”) more than 400 years ago, Michel de Montaigne not only gave us the “essay” as a literary form but also the inspiration to share personal reflections and lessons learned in the course of an interesting life. In 1580 he wrote that his work was “intended for the particular use of my relations and friends, in order that, when they have lost me (which they must soon do), they may here find some traces of my quality and humour, and may thereby nourish a more entire and lively recollection of me.” Admittedly that would be a pretentious way to describe a 21^st century website and blog by someone who lacks Montaigne’s talent, but it does capture the spirit of this site. Like the great man himself, it is “my wish to be seen in my simple, natural, and ordinary garb, without study or artifice, for ‘twas myself I had to paint.
